Mini play centre in Didcot

Thank you for visiting our research page. Your feedback for our final research would be most appreciated. This blog posting includes the location, floor plan and design ideas. Your comments on these would be welcome. Please read more below:

Proposed location near the Orchard centre in Didcot

Proposed building facing the SODC car park

Proposed layout
Entry door from car park at bottom, reception, tables and toilets to the left. Baby & toddler zone in yellow and the 4 yr + Play frame in green, with party room & offices to right.

Your feedback please
Please see below 4 design ideas that we have developed for the play frame inside the mini play centre for Didcot, due to open for October half term. Which and what do you like?
From our initial market research, we have found an accessible building, that offers a much needed facility for the town. You will see that our proposed design enables the parents or carers to sit and relax with a coffee (Lavazza brand) whilst being able to view 95% of the play frame, by looking over the baby / toddler area (3’s & under) and into the play frame providing you with peace of mind that your children are safe.
We would be grateful if you had time to review all 4 designs and let us know by email to mike@a1-group.co.uk or comment below, what you (and perhaps your children also) like or dislike about each.
Your views and help with this final research is very much appreciated, as we want to ensure we get it right first time!

  1. I like a combination of all them. (sorry know that doesn't help) I think it's really important that the younger play area is not in the way of the older children running around and possibly trying to get to their area.
Ball pits are always a huge success as well as slides.
I think it's great that this sort of facility is coming to Didcot, certainly something that is needed in the area.

  2. I really like the 4th option for the toddler area but like the 2nd option for the rest of the play area. I think this is just what didcot need for children,we have nothing in the town for them to do that is inside

  3. Yes, make sure the little ones are not stampeded by older children...!
    Fantastic idea! Well done!

  4. I think I like the 3rd one, with 2 types of slides, and the toddler area from the 4th version. However, it is difficult to tell what's in each area. Could you possibly put up a plan of each with labels to help us?

One comment I would add is that you'll probably need more ladies loos!

  5. Further Question - Do you think that the proposed mini play centre for Didcot, which will be smaller than Snakes & Ladders will impact your choice?

  6. If it's cleaner than Snakes and Ladders, I'd be happy (loos and equipment)

  7. the 2nd and 4th ones look great, i have a 6 year old who would love any climbing sliding and general running around and also have a 2 yr old that likes the same things just as much but is obviously restricted due to her size, anything than can incorporate the 2 ages into one place has my vote, we have been wanting something like this local to didcot for a long time, will save on petrol visiting abingdon.... GOOD LUCK!!

  8. Re snakes and ladders, I'm more than willing to head for a smaller setting because it is local. But to make smaller work, it needs to have a intimate feel, be kept really clean and have a comfy and inviting parent seating area. Papers available if you want the sun am crowd. Quality coffee and cakes does help! Oh and fruit/vaguely healthy snacks for kids please. Prices need to be kept lower than snakes and ladders which is prob the most expensive play centre I've been to.

  9. This is just what Didcot needs, fab :) Maybe some books, quieter toys in/near the cafe area, to help with unwinding after tearing around. Love the Toddler area from plan 4 but a combination of things for rest of area.

  10. I think its important to ensure that older children do not intefere with the baby/toddler area (maybe a corridor barrier a few feet hight linking all the older children areas). A very separate area for babies and toddlers which is enforced would be excellent. I have been to to many of these types of places where the parents sit at the other end with a coffee and a newspaper whilst their children run riot and staff just let it happen.
Its great we may have something like this in Didcot and I hope it is a success.

  11. I like the 4th option best, it seems to cater mainly for the younger child. I think these centres, unless you are going to have something the size of snakes and ladders, should cater just for the younger child. If you have far too broad an age range, the older children tend to 'take over' and you run the risk of your toddler getting knocked over or hearing things they really shouldnt! I really like the play centre at the Wyevale in Bicester as this is a smallish centre which only really attracts young children (under 8s).
